As parents, it can be tough to know how to best support your teen’s mental health, especially during times of stress or moments of disconnect. We won’t always have perfect communication with our teens and that’s okay… but to recognize when our teens are going through a tough time is a superpower that we need to know how to flex. When it comes to high-impact parenting hacks, the ability to create these moments of connection is unmatched.
You may have witnessed this over these past few winter months – but for teens in particular, shorter days and colder weather can sometimes lead to feeling more isolated, stressed, or even moody. That’s why after some conversations with our Teen Speak community, we wanted to focus on mental wellness and give you a resource you can bookmark and return to when the weather turns cold. But keep in mind that these tips apply year round!
Having the right tools makes all the difference. The Teen Speak Course offers practical strategies for improving communication, fostering emotional regulation, and helping your teen develop problem-solving skills. With these tools, you’ll feel more confident guiding your teen through life’s ups and downs while strengthening your connection.
It’s important to note that helping your teen build resilience isn’t about shielding them from challenges — it’s about giving them the tools to handle stress, setbacks, and tough emotions in healthy, effective ways. Here are some simple techniques to foster resilience and support your teen’s mental health through all seasons, but especially during cold and dark months:
1. Encourage Journaling
Writing down thoughts and feelings can be a powerful way for teens to process emotions and gain perspective. Journaling helps them identify stressors and celebrate small wins, making it easier to manage overwhelming feelings. If your teen is resistant to this, consider buying them a journal and simply leaving it on their bed. Don’t make it a big deal, but give them the space to decide when they may want to begin. A journal with prompts can help them break through the analysis paralysis of not knowing how to start.
2. Practice Mindfulness Together
Mindfulness exercises like deep breathing, meditation, or even mindful walks can help teens feel grounded. Practicing mindfulness together can also create meaningful bonding moments while teaching valuable coping skills. Many teens may not want to do this with you, but providing the tools and safe space for them to create this could be a gamechanger.
3. Keep Them Moving
Physical activity is a proven mood booster. Encourage your teen to stay active, whether it’s through a yoga class, walking the family dog, or organized sports. Movement helps release built-up stress and improves overall well-being.
4. Foster Social Connections
Winter can make it harder to stay connected, but friendships are key to mental health. Help your teen plan virtual hangouts, weekend outings, or cozy nights in with friends to keep those connections strong.
5. Open the Lines of Communication
Sometimes, teens just need to know you’re there to listen. Create a safe space where they can talk about what’s on their mind without fear of judgment or immediate solutions. A simple invitation to share can go a long way. For example: “I noticed how your mood shifted when I mentioned [briefly describe the thing that you mentioned]. Tell me more about what you’re experiencing??”
